Dede Standish is one of the guest characters in the first season, and a main character in the second of The Politician. She is portrayed by Judith Light.

Season 2[]
Dede is a New York State Senator running against Payton Hobart for her senate seat. She is many points ahead of him in the race and doesn't seem to be worried, that is until Payton threatens to uncover her "throuple" polyamorous relationship with her husband, Marcus Standish, and her boyfriend, William Ward.
The relationship crumbles under the pressure and William decides he doesn't want to be a third wheel. He falls in love with Hadassah Gold, Dede's campaign manager, but everyone agrees to be civil and cordial and live with Hadassah and William's decision to be together.
Dede and Payton battle head to head for points, each exposing scandalous things about the other until election day. Dede has more of a stake in this election than any other election because of Senator Tino McCutcheon's offer to be his vice presidential candidate. After a long campaign period, they both tie in the election and agree to let who wins the seat come down to a simple "Rock, Paper, Scissors" game.
After seeing Payton sing at a bar before the match that would decide the election, Dede believed the Payton was the right person for the job. Right before the Rock, Paper, Scissors match was set to begin, Dede conceded the election to Payton citing the need to pave the way for new leaders and energized leaders.
Now that Dede Standish lost her election, she was no longer an attractive running mate to Senator McCutcheon. However, her political career didn't end there. Now out of office, Dede receives a face-time call from Payton's mother, California Governor Georgina Hobart. She informs Dede of her plan to run for president of the United States and asks her to be on the ticket with plans to succeed her as president after their first term in office. She agrees and they go on to win the election. Before the inauguration, Dede finds Payton in a park jogging where she asks him if he would be interested in running with her in four years. He agrees.
